About This Treatment
What is Ingrown Toenail Removal?
An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin rather than over it. This pierces the skin like a splinter, causing pain, redness, and swelling. Left untreated, bacteria enter through the break in the skin and the area becomes infected , sometimes producing pus or bleeding.
Ingrown toenail removal is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthetic. The offending nail edge is carefully removed down to the root, and a chemical (phenol) is applied to permanently destroy the nail matrix in that corner. This prevents regrowth and resolves the problem for good.

Quick Facts
Ingrown Toenail Removal at a Glance
Our Approach
Our Ingrown Toenail Approach
At The One Clinic, we use a precise three-step surgical method that relieves pain immediately and prevents the problem from ever returning.
Local Anaesthetic
We administer a ring block injection at the base of the toe. Within minutes the entire toe is fully numb, ensuring the procedure is completely pain-free from start to finish.
Nail Edge Removal & Phenolisation
The ingrown edge is carefully lifted and removed down to the root. Phenol is then applied directly to the nail matrix in that corner, permanently destroying the cells that cause regrowth.
Sterile Dressing & Discharge
The wound is dressed with a sterile bandage. You receive full aftercare instructions, a dressing kit, and a follow-up appointment. Most patients walk out within an hour of arrival.
Final Results
Our three-step approach , anaesthetic, avulsion, and phenolisation , delivers immediate pressure relief, infection control, and a permanent cure in a single appointment. The wound heals fully within 4,6 weeks and the treated edge will not regrow.
What to Expect
Your Treatment Journey
Consultation & Assessment
Our doctor examines your nail and surrounding skin, discusses your symptoms, and confirms the correct treatment approach. A personalised procedure plan is created.
Procedure Day
A local anaesthetic ring block is administered to fully numb the toe. The offending nail edge is then carefully removed down to the root.
Phenolisation & Dressing
Phenol is applied to the nail matrix to destroy the cells that grow the ingrown section, preventing regrowth. The toe is dressed with a sterile bandage.
Full Recovery
You walk out the same day. The wound heals over 2,4 weeks with regular dressing changes. Full activity resumes within 4,6 weeks, with no risk of that edge returning.
Ingrown Toenail Removal Benefits
Immediate Relief
The pressure and pain caused by the nail spike resolve as soon as the anaesthetic wears off and the offending edge has been removed.
High Cure Rate
Phenolisation of the nail matrix delivers a 95%+ permanent cure rate , far superior to simple nail-cutting or conservative measures alone.
Cosmetically Neat
Only the ingrown side strip is removed , the rest of the nail remains intact and grows normally, leaving a naturally narrower but healthy-looking nail.
Quick Procedure
The entire appointment, including numbing time, takes around 45,60 minutes. You can usually book the procedure within days of your initial consultation.
Walk Away Same Day
There is no general anaesthetic, no overnight stay, and no surgical incision. You walk out of the clinic on the same day and can return to light activities immediately.
No General Anaesthetic
The procedure uses only a local ring block, eliminating the risks and recovery associated with general anaesthetic or hospital admission.
Is This Right for You?
Who is Suitable for Ingrown Toenail Removal?
This procedure is suitable if you are:
- Suffering from recurring ingrown toenails that keep coming back
- Experiencing significant pain, redness, or swelling around the nail edge
- Noticing signs of infection such as discharge, pus, or bleeding from the nail fold
- Finding that home remedies, cotton-wool tricks, or antibiotics have not resolved the problem
- Unable to wear normal shoes or walk comfortably due to nail pain
This procedure is NOT suitable if you have:
- Severe peripheral vascular disease affecting blood supply to the foot
- Active severe infection without adequate antibiotic cover , antibiotics first, then surgery
- Confirmed allergy to local anaesthetic agents
If you are unsure, book a consultation and our doctor will confirm whether the procedure is right for you.
The Science Behind Ingrown Toenail Removal
The gold-standard treatment is Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) with phenolisation. After the toe is fully anaesthetised with a ring block, the ingrown nail edge is lifted and excised in a single strip from the nail plate down to the germinal matrix , the tissue responsible for growing that section of nail.
Liquefied phenol is then applied precisely to the exposed matrix. The chemical permanently destroys the cells in that corner, preventing the problematic edge from regrowing. Clinical data consistently show a 95%+ cure rate with this technique , far superior to simple nail trimming or conservative measures.
This Procedure Addresses
- Acute ingrown toenails
- Chronic recurring ingrown nails
- Infected nail folds
- Painful nail spikes
- Hypergranulation tissue
- Post-trauma nail problems
Post-Treatment
What to Expect After Treatment
Recovery Timeline
Mild soreness is common for 2,3 days once the anaesthetic wears off and is well managed with paracetamol. The wound produces some discharge during healing , this is entirely normal.
The toe is fully healed within 4,6 weeks. Most patients return to sport and gym activities by this point, with no further episodes from the treated edge.
Possible Side Effects
Toenail surgery is very safe. Temporary side effects are minor and expected:
- Soreness for 2,3 days (managed with paracetamol)
- Clear or slightly bloody wound weeping during healing
- Mild swelling around the treated area
- Infection (rare when aftercare instructions are followed)
We provide full written aftercare instructions and a follow-up appointment to monitor healing.
Aftercare Tips
- Keep the dressing clean and dry; change daily or as instructed
- Soak foot in warm salt water once the dressing is removed
- Wear open-toed shoes or loose sandals for the first week
- Avoid tight footwear for at least two weeks
- Attend your follow-up dressing-change appointment
- Trim remaining toenails straight across , never down the sides

No. We perform a Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA), removing only the ingrown side strip. The rest of the nail stays intact and looks only slightly narrower.
Yes , you can walk out of the clinic. Your toe will still be numb for a couple of hours and you will have a dressing on, so we advise bringing open-toed sandals or loose shoes.
Very unlikely. We use phenol to permanently destroy the nail matrix in the treated corner. This gives a recurrence rate of less than 5%, compared with 70,80% after simple nail cutting.
Most patients can wear wide, comfortable shoes after a few days. Avoid tight shoes or heels for at least two weeks while the wound heals fully.
