What Is A Weak Chin?
If you have a less prominent chin, also known as a weak chin or jaw, it means that you have a chin that lacks definition and does not sit in proportion with your other facial features. You may have more of a soft chin or a receding chin. This is where the chin curves inwards towards the neck. Or maybe you have started to notice a recessed chin due to the natural ageing process. Having a weak chin is not generally a health concern and should not affect how you live your life. However, because the chin and jawline play an important role in how we look, we find more people want to fix a weak chin so that they can have more structure and definition to their lower face. If you are considering weak chin treatment, you may be surprised to know that chin surgery or chin augmentation is not your only option. In fact, one of the best ways to correct a weak chin is with the help of dermal fillers. Our aesthetic doctors at The One Clinic break down what a weak chin is and how you can achieve more structure to your chin and jaw with dermal filler treatment.

What is a weak chin or a receding chin?

In short, if you have a weak or recessed chin, your chin does not sit symmetrically with your jawline. Your chin bone may not have a prominent position on your lower face and may appear to slope back towards the neck. For many people, a weak chin is the result of a medical condition known as mandibular retrognathia or a receding chin. This is a condition whereby the lower jaw bone sits inwards. It can also lead to the upper and lower jaw not meeting together when your jaw is clenched. Your genetics can also result in you having a weak chin. If your parents have a small chin or weak upper and lower jawline, you are more likely to develop this, too.

Main causes of a weak chin

The lower and upper jaw

A weak chin can be influenced by the position of your lower and upper jawbone because of:
  • The lower jaw or mandible is underdeveloped or sits further back. This can lead to the chin looking more recessed.
  • The upper jaw can be overdeveloped. This is less common, but it can make the lower jaw and chin look weak and like it is receding.

Genetics

As we mentioned earlier, a family history of weak chins plays the biggest role in you developing a weak chin. This includes an underdeveloped jawbone, which is often a family trait.

Ageing

Ageing is a completely natural process. But as part of this process, we start to lose skin elasticity, which means we begin to see less volume and structure in our skin, causing it to sag. This is because, as we age, we begin to lose levels of collagen and elastin in the skin. These are two proteins that are crucial to giving our skin its firmness and structure. This is why we see sagging skin under the chin (double chin) and jawline (jowls).

An overbite

An overbite is when your front top teeth overlap your bottom teeth. As a result, this can push the position of your chin and lower jaw back. This leads to your chin looking weaker.

Overactive Muscles

You can also develop a weak chin if you overuse the mentalis muscle. This is the muscle that raises the skin on the chin and provides support to the lower lip. If you use this muscle too much it can result in the chin being drawn back and dimples on the chin.

Best weak chin treatment , dermal fillers

At one time, weak chin surgery and jaw surgery were the go-to options to correct a weak chin. The surgery would require the use of chin implants and jaw implants to change your facial structure and give you a more defined chin and jaw. Not only is this option costly, but it can be painful and require a lot of downtime. Today, non-surgical treatments such as chin fillers can help to fix a weak chin or weak jawline without changing your facial structure. They also require little to no downtime and can help you achieve a natural and more symmetrical lower face.

What are dermal fillers for the chin area?

Dermal filler treatment or chin filler helps to add volume and definition to the lower face to bring it in proportion with your other facial features. They are an injectable treatment that consists of hyaluronic acid as their main ingredient. This helps to boost hydration and give your skin a natural glow and youthful look. Dermal filler injections not only plump sagging skin or hollow areas around the chin and jawline, but they also smooth out lines and wrinkles. This includes chin dimples and nose-to-mouth wrinkles. At The One Clinic, our experts also use dermal fillers for other areas of the face including the cheeks, nose, lips (lip filler) and under-eye area (tear troughs).

How do chin fillers work?

At The One Clinic, we provide every patient with an in-depth consultation so that we can assess your chin shape and structure. You will meet with one of our aesthetic doctors who will look at your medical history and ask questions about your chin concerns. From this, we can build a bespoke treatment plan to correct your weak chin. If dermal fillers are right for you, we will walk you through where the injection sites will be to help create a more sculpted and defined chin area. If you will benefit from jawline fillers as well, your doctor will discuss this option with you. The doctor will inject the chin fillers using a very fine needle. This ensures the filler placement is more precise so that we can reduce any bruising you may see after treatment. Before we inject the dermal filler, we will apply a numbing cream to the chin area. This will ensure your treatment is more comfortable. Your chin filler treatment should take 30-60 minutes to complete. This will depend on what look you are hoping to achieve and if we include jawline fillers as part of your treatment plan.

How long do the results of chin fillers last?

The good news is that you will see a viable improvement in chin projection and chin shape straight away. This will continue to improve as the fillers settle, which can take up to two weeks. The results of your chin filler treatment can last for 6-18 months. This will depend on different factors such as your age, health and metabolism. We usually advise that you come back into the clinic for a top-up treatment at around the 12-month mark. This ensures that you maintain your great results.

Are chin fillers safe?

Chin fillers are a safer option than surgery for anyone looking for a more pronounced chin. They do not require opening the skin or changing your bone or face structure. Having said this, you do need to consult with a qualified doctor or nurse practitioner. This is because dermal filler treatment requires an advanced knowledge of facial anatomy. Our team of doctors at The One Clinic have over 45 years of experience between them. They understand how to inject dermal fillers at the right depth and points in the face to achieve a natural look. It is normal to see some slight swelling and bruising in the treatment area. This will go down within the first 48 hours. Your doctor will provide you with aftercare instructions to ensure you help your fillers settle and get the most out of your results.
